  • Firing order 1-3-4-2
  • 8 valve cylinder head with siamese inlet ports
  • capacity 850, 997, 998, 1100 1275cc
  • Single or twin SU carbs or later models had bosh single point fuel injection
  • Lucas distributor till EFI models

This is my engine bay once i took delivery of the car.  It does not look much, but started well and had no hints of smoke.  Not bad for a Mini A- series engine thats been stood for over a year.  Unfortunately I was unable to take it for a teast drive due to the suspension and steering damage.  As it turns out, this was a blessing in disguise as the bodyshell had lost most of its structural integrity and probably would have folded in half in the case of a heavy impact.

Plans for the future.

Once the body is repaired I plan to refit this engine, maybe with some light modifications.

  • Gas Flowed cylinder head
  • Longer duration and higher lift camshaft
  • Lightened flywheel
  • LCB exhaust manifold.
  • Twin 1 1/4 SU HS2 carburetors
  • Electronic points replacment

this is a temporary solution to try and make the car more fun on a budget while testing out the re-built suspension and brakes.  The more longer term goal is to instal an A-series 1380cc with a BMW k1200 16 valve head.  There are many kits and lots of advice out there and I will try to document most of the engine build as I go.  I have already purchased the head from Ebay, but the shell is tghe priority for now.

Here  is my most recent purchase.  A set of twin 1-1/4 SU HS2 carburetors fitted to an Alexander inlet manifold.  I had never heard of this manifold manufacturer.  After doing some research it would apear they were an early tuning specialist and these carbs were from a Mk 3 997cc Cooper S
